Layer by Layer

July Featured Artist Janice Kindred refers to herself as a layerist, but not in the way that many painters understand the term. Instead of layering paint, Janice builds layers of paper in her exciting and innovative collages. The results are unusually thick pieces, rich in texture and color.
“The early layers are mostly found paper, such as opened envelopes, bills, old letters, diary pages, etc… My beginning stages are without specific thought so I can apply with abandon, methodically building and adding small pieces of paper, or at times covering the entire board in a single layer. Each layer must dry thoroughly which forces me to work on several boards at concurrently and over a period of many days,” she explained.
“The base layers are shades of white. The middle layers incorporate color by use of handmade patterned papers and textures, alternating light or white colors. At this stage I begin subtracting using tools to reduce areas by sanding the entire surface to strip away, revealing and exposing parts below. Almost always areas begin to show that appeal to me with unexpected play of pattern and color. Still working in an abstract manner, I begin to form a composition. Finishing is the part I love most as every step I add creates an issue elsewhere that will need to be resolved. It’s push and pull until finally there is a focus!”
“The painting Cold Beer/Live Bait has twenty or so layers of papers. I used dry embossing to impress patterns into watercolor paper for some of the top areas. I also added touches of fabrics, netting or screen to catch paint on the surfaces. In its early stages, I sanded into the layers to help find my direction. At a mid-point, I sanded again to soften the surface edges of the layers,” she added.
Janice began working in mixed media after moving to the Chattanooga area in 2011. She is a founding member of Mixed Media Inspired Artists, a local group of like-minded artists, and has exhibited with them in venues throughout the area. She cites her father, who took up oil painting late in life (and continues to paint in his late eighties!) and childhood trips to the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio as sources of inspiration.
