DOUG BARKER

Wood

I am inspired by the elements of nature, and believe we are comforted by functional art that brings a sense of the outdoors into our environment. In this day of mass-production, I believe cherish the calming effect of hand made fine craft. In all my work I highlight the natural beauty of the wood by simple designs, avoiding stains and unneeded decorations.”

Doug began woodworking in his father’s shop, making toy boats to float down the creek behind his house.

He refined his skills while in the Army, working the various Army craft shops around the world.  Out of necessity, Doug built furniture for his family that survived the punishment of frequent military moves.

Doug retired from the Army and became a computer programmer, but always yearned for the satisfaction he felt from working with his hands.  He continued building and selling furniture as a part-time adventure.  After ten years, he decided to pursue his dreams and became an assistant to a professional furniture maker in Rome Georgia.

Doug soon felt the desire to design and build his own furniture and is eternally grateful to his mentor, Ben Harrison of Rome Georgia.

Doug lives in Rome Georgia with his wife and two sons.
