Sandra Paynter Washburn


Sandra is a professional artist and art educator who maintains a studio in the Chattanooga, TN area. Her studio work has evolved to include exploratory acrylic painting, mixed media, assemblage, and bench forged art jewelry. In 2013- 2015, Sandra mounted five solo shows and participated in several juried group exhibitions. Sandra’s painting and experimental mixed media classes, taught throughout the southeastern US, are widely recognized for developing creative and technical growth among her students. She has taught workshops for the Tennessee Art Education Association, Watkins Design Institute, Tennessee Watercolor Society, Knox County Art Education Association, Tellico Village Art Guild, Arrowmont School, Tennessee Art League of Nashville, Hunter Museum of American Art, and the Association of Visual Artists in Chattanooga, among others. Sandra works as a freelance instructor and product demonstrator for Strathmore and Ampersand ¬†products at Jerry’s Artarama in Knoxville, Plaza Arts in Nashville, Forstall Art Supply in Birmingham, AL, and Art Creations in Chattanooga, TN.¬† She also teaches ongoing classes in acrylics and mixed media at Art Creations at Hamilton Place. She is founder of MMIA (Mixed Media Inspired Artists), a collective of 16 women artists who are advanced students in her Art Creations classes. MMIA has mounted 6 group showings in the last two years, and have a full slate of venues for 2016-17. A community service aspect of the group is the support of Second Life, an outreach program that helps women who have been exploited in sex trafficking, to start a new life. Sandra, whose work and working methods have been featured in The Artists Magazine, is a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor and Tennessee Watercolor Society, where her aqueous acrylic paintings have won numerous awards. She has a BFA in Art Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where her studio concentrations were painting and fibers
